Kindergarteners start the year recognizing and drawing simple shapes, We talk about colors, numbers, line, and direction (vertical, horizontal, and diagonal). They also learn about the difference between empty and solid shapes and what patterns in art are. After we've talked about these things and I've shown them examples students do a directed drawing. I give everyone the same instructions and they draw according to my instructions. They may pick their medium--pencil, crayon, oil pastels, or colored pencil, the size of what they draw, the thickness of their lines, and the color. The drawings below are from one of their earliest exercises.
